- How long are the sessions?
- All sessions are 50 to 60 minutes long.
- Can I really talk about anything?
- Absolutely. I am committed to providing a confidential, non-judgemental space for you to talk about whatever is troubling you - no matter how 'bad' or 'wrong' it might feel.
- Are sessions confidential?
- Everything discussed during sessions is strictly confidential. The only person I can discuss your case with is my supervisor, but this is within a professional setting and is also strictly confidential. The only times that confidentiality might have to be broken is if there is a serious risk to either yourself or to someone close to you, but this would be discussed with you at the time.
- What's the difference between counselling and therapy?
- The term 'counselling' is generally used to describe shorter-term work around a difficult event or a certain problem in someone's life. Therapy is usually for a longer period, more in-depth and more concerned with how a person experiences themselves and their relationships.
- How long does counselling/therapy take?
- There are all sorts of reasons to seek out counselling and therapy. Some people are dealing with a specific problem or a situation which requires short term work. Others want the opportunity for a wider and more detailed reflection on their lives and relationship and this takes a longer period. At our initial appointment we will be able to establish which type of therapy is right for you.
- Do I need a referral from my GP?
- No. If you choose to contact a private counsellor/therapist, your GP doesn't need to refer you. It's up to you whether you let them know.
- How much does it cost?
- As people's ability to pay can vary greatly, rather than having a set price for sessions I discuss the level of my fee with each client.
- Would I need to lie on a couch?
- No. Couches are most often used by psychoanalysts (the type of psychotherapy originated by Sigmund Freud). We work sitting in comfortable chairs.
